Bonaventure on the beatific vision: A response to Hans Boersma

This paper examines Hans Boersma's critique of Bonaventure's view of the beatific vision. Boersma argues that mystical union with God in this life must involve both intellect and will, contrary to Bonaventure's claim that it occurs only through the will. The author contends that Boersma overlooks Bonaventure's Commentary on the Gospel of John, where Bonaventure explains that the beatific vision does unify intellect and will, but sin prevents the intellect from experiencing such union in earthly life. The analysis suggests Boersma requires a more robust account of intellect and will to effectively critique Bonaventure.
