The ontological turn in cultural and philosophical anthropology has changed how symbols are interpreted, moving away from representationalism, functionalism, and relativism toward treating symbols as objects or things. Religious symbols play a key role in human identity and self-knowledge. The authors argue for an ontological concept of the symbolic landscape, linking symbol interpretation to object-oriented ontology and the philosophy of science. In modern social media, religious symbols help construct identity and self-positioning.
