A writer writes on Amazonian plant medicines
Mundo Amazónico July 7, 2021 Jimmy Weiskopf
The author examines how writers use substances like coffee, tobacco, or alcohol for inspiration, questioning whether dependence necessarily harms judgment or constitutes addiction when the writer remains in control and the work's quality matters. Extending this to three Amazonian plant medicines—ayahuasca, mambe, and ambil—the author draws on personal experience and academic and indigenous accounts to describe their distinct effects. The conclusion is that these plants offer no shortcuts to writing a decent novel or essay; they may aid a writer only if used with restraint and respect for the plants' spirits, which indigenous views hold animate them. Talent, persistence, and hard work remain essential.
