Theosis
The Oxford Handbook of Mystical Theology February 25, 2020 Aristotle Papanikolaou
Theosis, a concept often misunderstood as mythological, is central to Christian thought. It responds to Jesus' question 'who do you say that I am?' by experiencing his messianic message as the presencing of the divine in both Jesus and humanity. This understanding exemplifies mystical theology, shaping Christian expressions about God and the experience of divine presence. The chapter examines how theosis amplified the Christian understanding of God as Trinity and the Christian understanding of virtue.
