EMBRACE Study: Outcomes of a Randomized, Mindfulness-Based Intervention for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease.

Pediatric cardiology July 2, 2025 Vicki A Freedenberg, Rachel Steury, Robert Podolsky et al.

Anxiety and depression are common among adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). A randomized wait-list control study tested a virtual mindfulness-based behavioral intervention (MBBI) delivered for 90 minutes once weekly over six weeks, compared to standard care. Among 31 participants who completed the study, the intervention led to meaningful improvements: 60.9% showed reduced anxiety, 48.4% showed reduced depression, 43.6% showed increased resilience, and 69.4% showed increased mindfulness. Satisfaction surveys indicated 97% found the program effective. Qualitative themes included community connections and focus on self-care. The intervention demonstrates effectiveness for improving mental health and coping skills in ACHD patients.
