High levels of bufotenine (BUTN) and its precursor, N-methylserotonin, accumulate mainly in the brains of toads, particularly in the hindbrain regions. In a study involving urine samples from infant autistic patients, BUTN was detected, suggesting it could serve as a potential diagnostic marker for autism. The analysis utilized three-dimensional HPLC and indicates that these compounds may offer valuable insights into the neurological underpinnings of psychiatric conditions linked to serotonin methylation, highlighting a fascinating connection between toad biology and human mental health.
