Toxicological Profiles of Poisonous, Edible, and Medicinal Mushrooms

Mushrooms are valued in the human diet for their nutritional and therapeutic properties, but some species cause toxicity, leading to serious poisoning cases each year, often due to misidentification. Various toxic substances from poisonous mushrooms can cause fatal effects including liver failure, bradycardia, chest pain, seizures, gastroenteritis, intestinal fibrosis, renal failure, erythromelalgia, and rhabdomyolysis. Accurate categorization and understanding of mushroom species are essential for safe consumption as functional foods and for medicinal use.

Chemical Constituents ofGymnopilus spectabilisand Their Antioxidant Activity

Gymnopilus spectabilis, a hallucinogenic mushroom with a bitter taste, contains psilocybin. From its fruiting bodies, four compounds were isolated: 4,6-decadiyne-1,3,8-triol, ergosta-4,6,8(14),22-tetraen-3-one, bisnoryangonin, and hispidin. Bisnoryangonin and hispidin showed strong scavenging activity against ABTS, DPPH, and superoxide radicals, indicating antioxidant potential. The other two compounds had no antioxidant activity.
