Exploring the integration of psychedelic-assisted therapy and digital mental health interventions in trauma recovery for underserved adults with high-functioning autism

Trauma-related disorders and substance use are underdiagnosed and undertreated in individuals with High-Functioning Autism (Level 1 ASD), especially those in underserved communities. Psychedelic-assisted therapies (psilocybin, MDMA, ketamine) show promise for treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, and addiction, while digital mental health interventions (AI-driven CBT, telepsychiatry) expand access for racial/ethnic minorities, rural populations, and Medicaid beneficiaries. However, the intersection of these treatments with the neuropsychological profiles of high-functioning autistic individuals is underexplored. This review synthesizes evidence on these interventions for trauma and addiction recovery in this population, noting that trauma is often masked by compensatory behaviors or misinterpreted as autistic traits. It proposes a hybrid, culturally responsive, neurodevelopmentally sensitive care model integrating digital accessibility and psychedelics.
