Psilocybin, a hallucinogenic alkaloid produced by fungi of the genus Psilocybe, has been a controversial topic in therapeutic research since the 1950s. These fungi also synthesize muscarine, a toxic parasympathetic stimulant. Psilocybin was first isolated from Psilocybe mexicana, and over 30 species have been discovered. Aztec shamans and Mesoamerican populations used psilocybin mushrooms in healing, religious, and divinatory rituals. The liver converts psilocybin into psilocin through phosphorylation, producing the psychoactive effect. The substance's introduction into medicine and psychotherapy has sparked ongoing controversy.
