A thin film with ordered gold islands on glass was developed for detecting multiple analytes. Micro/nano-imprint lithography created uniform gold islands, and self-assembly added contrasting chemical groups: thiol on gold and amine on glass. These groups selectively bind heavy metal ions—thiol binds mercury, amine binds copper. Surface plasmon resonance measurements allowed simultaneous detection and quantification of both ions in water. This approach provides a single substrate for multi-detection of heavy metal pollutants.
