Depression is likely to become the leading cause of disability worldwide by 2030, affecting about 5.8% of the Brazilian population. Pharmacological intervention often uses tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, some derived from plants. Ayahuasca, prepared from Banisteriopsis caapi, may have antidepressant effects. A bibliographic review of literature from 2006 to 2017 concluded that ayahuasca causes subacute changes in brain regions involved in emotional processing, and these changes correlate positively with reduced depression symptoms observed one day after treatment.
