A method for measuring 41 traditional and emerging drugs of abuse and their metabolites in particulate matter, sewage sludge, and sediment was developed and validated. Samples were extracted with a buffer and methanol using ultrasound, then cleaned up with solid phase extraction and analyzed by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. Recoveries were at least 50% for most compounds, except ephedrine, EDDP, ecgonine methylester, heroin, MDA, 4-AcO-DIPT, and methadone. Detection limits were below 1.32 ng/g dry weight. Applied to real samples, cocaine, benzoylecgonine, ecgonine methylester, cocaethylene, methadone, and codeine were most common in particulate matter; opioids dominated in sludge; and cocaine, 4-methoxyphencyclidine, methadone, and benzoylecgonine were prominent in sediment.
