Ibogaine is a naturally occurring indole alkaloid found in African shrubs of the Tabernathe genus, particularly the root of Tabernathe iboga. Chemically classified as a tryptamine and structurally similar to harmaline, it was first extracted in 1901. The plant contains 11 other psychoactive constituents. Ibogaine can be synthesized from nicotinamide via a 13- or 14-step process, though extraction from the iboga root is simpler.
