This article presents and discusses the different patterns of regulation adopted in Brazil over the past 20 years regarding the use of ayahuasca for religious purposes, with emphasis on the debate about criminalization. Post-industrial society and the postmodern condition serve as the backdrop for the dilemmas raised by this issue.
