RÉSISTANCES CONTRE LE DISCOURS DOMINANT SUR LES DROGUES : USAGES THÉRAPEUTIQUES ET RELIGIEUX DE L’AYAHUASCA DANS LE MONDE GLOBALISÉ

Revue québécoise de droit international March 18, 2020 Hughes Brisson

The legality and legitimacy of ayahuasca practices are established in the states where they originate, but when these groups and their practices globalize and cross borders, they face the inquisition of dominant drug discourse. Legal terrain is the most fertile and invested by ayahuasca ritual carriers, as its analysis reveals how the state understands this psychoactive infusion, the discourse it formulates about it, and its role in the social construction of ayahuasca. Carriers also invest other terrains of resistance—media use, research involvement, lobbying—to defend ayahuasca's legitimacy.
