This essay argues for the central role of the subject in consciousness studies. It begins with the 'hard problem' of the psychophysical nexus as framed by David Chalmers, Thomas Nagel, and Colin McGinn. It then contrasts materialism and dualism with Buddhist ontology, followed by a brief account of Francisco Varela's neurophenomenology. Finally, it presents Buddhist meditation as a valid introspective method that reclaims the subject's place in consciousness research.
