Trance and possession involve losing control of one's body or consciousness. Western psychology typically explains these as medical or psychological conditions treatable with drugs and therapy, while Islamic psychology attributes them to supernatural forces affecting mental state. A comparative qualitative and descriptive literature review shows both perspectives recognize psychological factors, but Islamic psychology accepts supernatural influences that Western psychology rejects. The two views can complement each other for a more holistic understanding.
