Fantastic Fungi, 2019
Journal of Pastoral Care & Counseling November 13, 2021 F. Gelo
A documentary film explores the hidden world of fungi, from their essential ecological roles to the controversial history and therapeutic potential of psilocybin, a mushroom-derived psychedelic. The film argues that irrational fear and legal prohibition, notably the 1970 Controlled Substances Act, halted promising research into psychedelic-assisted therapy for mental health. Recent limited trials suggest that a single, accompanied psychedelic experience can produce life-changing benefits for patients when traditional medicine has failed. The documentary presents fungi as both a vital, invisible kingdom in the cycle of life and a catalyst for spiritual and mystical experiences, challenging powerful interests that control knowledge for their own benefit.
