Celebrating Guided Imagery and Music developments in Europe

A special issue of Approaches journal celebrates the formation of the European Association of Music and Imagery (EAMI) in 2016, marking a new independent branch of Guided Imagery and Music (GIM). GIM, a music therapy method founded in the 1970s by Helen Lindquist Bonny, uses classical music in an expanded state of consciousness to evoke imagery, emotions, and memories. A session includes pre-talk, relaxation, music listening with dialogue, expression through painting, and processing. The method has spread globally, with adaptations for mental health and medical settings. European GIM is characterized by diversity in clinical applications and training, and the formation of EAMI aims to embrace this diversity while strengthening ties with other music therapy organizations.
