Various ethnic groups in Sumatra, including the Batak, Minangkabau, and Bukit Barisan tribes, maintain distinct shamanic traditions that involve rituals and specialists to counter black magic and heal ailments. Among the Batak, shamans called "datu" uphold social and spiritual balance by retaliating against dark sorcery or providing healing. In Minangkabau society, "bundo kanduang" possess expertise in traditional healing and countering black magic. The Bukit Barisan people practice shamanism centered on nature spirits and ancestors, with spiritual leaders maintaining community equilibrium. These practices vary across groups and have been influenced by Islam and Christianity. Understanding this cultural legacy highlights Indonesia's diversity and the ongoing adaptation of traditions.
