"Research chemicals": tryptamine and phenethylamine use among high-risk youth.

Among 42 high-risk youth interviewed in Los Angeles during 2005–2006, use of lesser-known tryptamines and phenethylamines was infrequent, spontaneous, and occurred mainly at music venues like festivals, concerts, or raves. Several youth purchased these 'research chemicals' online and used them privately. While many reported positive experiences, short-term negative health outcomes included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, disorientation, and frightening hallucinations. The findings, based on pilot data, begin to characterize the epidemiology of these substances among high-risk youth.
