Psilocybin, the active compound in Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms, is a serotonin 5HT2A receptor agonist. Clinical trials show promising results for treating generalized anxiety disorder and depression in terminal cancer patients. This literature review examined psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy for depression and anxiety in life-threatening cancer patients. Three randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials from 143 screened articles met inclusion criteria. The studies found psilocybin safe and effective for reducing anxiety and depression symptoms, improving well-being and optimism, and decreasing cancer-related psychological and existential distress. Psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may be promising in palliative oncology care.
