Development of the Mindfulness in Nursing Care Scale.

A new 16-item scale, the Mindfulness in Nursing Care Scale, was developed and tested with 481 nurses at a university hospital in northern Turkey. The scale measures a single factor, with item loadings from 0.453 to 0.684. It shows high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.87) and composite reliability (0.87), with an average variance extracted of 0.63. Confirmatory factor analysis confirms acceptable fit. The scale is valid, reliable, and consistent over time, and may help nurses better understand themselves and those they care for, as well as support accurate measurement in nursing science research.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: This study aimed to develop a valid, reliable, and consistent measurement tool that determines the level of mindfulness in nursing care. Methods: This is a methodologically designed study. The data were collected from 481 nurses working at a university hospital in northern Turkey. The data collection tools included the Personal Information Form and the Mindfulness in Nursing Care Scale. The data were analyzed by performing the content validity analysis, factor analysis, and reliability analysis. The t test was used in dependent groups to test reliability against time. Results: The study revealed that the Mindfulness in Nursing Care Scale consists of 16 items under one factor. The factor loadings of the items were found to range from .453 to 0.684 in the exploratory factor analysis. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the fit index values were found to be within acceptable limits. Cronbach's coefficient α was determined to be 0.87, while the composite reliability value was 0.87, and the average variance extracted was 0.63. Conclusions: The Mindfulness in Nursing Care Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool that makes consistent measurements over time. This scale is anticipated to contribute to nurses' better understanding of themselves and the individuals they provide care for. It could be readily used in academic studies related to nursing science and provide accurate measurements.
