Healing in the Nixi Pae ayahuasca rites offered in large Brazilian cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo operates through a controlled form of ordering misunderstandings. Monthly meetings of about thirty people consume forest medicines—ayahuasca, snuff, and kambô—under a young Kaxinawa shamanic apprentice and a Jungian psychologist. The ayahuasca-induced visions generate psychic material interpreted by the seeker. The article hypothesizes that the mythical Kaxinawa being Yube resonates with the Jungian concept of the unconscious, creating a metaphorical continuum that recasts individual narratives considered pathological as meaningful, enabling healing through shared misunderstanding.

Abstract

O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar os mecanismos terapêuticos encontrados em um rito de cura oferecidos em grandes cidades brasileiras, como Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, onde esta é obtida através do consumo ritual da ayahuasca. Os encontros são realizados mensalmente para um público de aproximadamente trinta pessoas que se reúnem para consumir as chamadas “medicinas da floresta” (ayahuasca, rapé e kampô). Organizado por um grupo de psicólogos, o rito do Nixi Pae tem como objetivo desempenhar o papel de um ritual “ancestral” de cura do povo huni kuin com a bebida “sagrada” amazônica sob a condução de um jovem aprendiz de pajé, filho de uma importante liderança kaxinawa. Um dos principais potenciais terapêuticos da ayahuasca explorado pelos ritos é sua capacidade de provocar visões. Este estado gera um importante material psíquico que deve ser interpretado por aquele que busca a cura. A hipótese deste artigo é que a cura nos ritos do Nixi Pae acontece graças a uma forma controlada de ordenar equívocos na qual o ser mítico kaxinawa Yube encontra pontos de ressonância com o conceito junguiano de inconsciente recriando, através do consumo ritual da ayahuasca, narrativas individuais consideradas como patológicas. This paper aims to explore and comprehend the therapeutical mechanisms that result from the meetings of a kaxinawa shaman and a Jungian psychologist that offer medicinal rites that envolve ayahuasca consumption to residentes in several large cities of Brazil. The meetings are held monthly and serve a group of about 30 people who unite to indulge in the so called “forest medicines” (ayahuasca, snuff and kambô). Organized by a group of psychologists, the Nixi Pae rite attempts to play the role of an ancestral curing ritual of the huni kuin people, that uses the sacred Amazonian drink under instructions of a young shamanic apprentice who is the son of an important kaxinawa leader. The hypothesis of this research article is that the Nixi Pae rites operate a model of healing based on misunderstandings where a mutual sensation of comprehension ensues due to the synonym effect, which places spiritual and mythological beings on the same level of psychological and sentimental stages, creating a metaphorical continuum between those involved.
