Phencyclidine, originally developed as a general anesthetic, has also been used as a chemical model of schizophrenia and as a drug of abuse. Research on phencyclidine and its chemical derivatives, such as ketamine, has laid a foundation for understanding the neuropathology of schizophrenia, though this understanding is still in its early stages.
