Examination of the hallucinogen 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine

Journal of Pharmacy and Pharmacology January 1, 1969 G F Phillips, R J Mesley

A new hallucinogenic drug circulating under the name "STP" was identified as 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM). The drug was extracted from a tablet and characterized using high-resolution mass spectrometry, NMR, ultraviolet and infrared spectroscopy, and chromatography. The compound exhibited two distinct solid forms (polymorphs) that were studied by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry. Animal behavioral tests showed its psychotomimetic activity is comparable to mescaline but up to 50 times more potent.
