Who Am I: The Conscious and the Unconscious Self
Frontiers in Human Neuroscience March 17, 2017 Michael Schaefer, Georg Northoff 43 citations
The self has two facets: a conscious self generated by cortical midline structures in the brain, and an unconscious self linked to embodied cognition via somatosensory cortices. This model draws on neuroscience imaging studies and theories of embodied cognition. The article describes problems with this dual-self model and discusses possible theoretical solutions.
