An online mindfulness-based intervention (eMBI) over eight weeks helped reduce shortness of breath in patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD). In a controlled trial, 48.9% of those who completed the eMBI reported less dyspnea on the mMRC scale, compared with 15.4% in the control group. The program did not significantly improve cough-related quality of life, overall quality of life, depression, anxiety, or stress. No moderate or severe side effects occurred. The approach appears safe and potentially useful for managing breathlessness in ILD.

Perception of Gratitude During an Online Mindfulness-Based Intervention (eMBI) in Patients with Interstitial Lung Disease in Brazil: An Exploratory Qualitative Study.

Journal of religion and health June 1, 2026 Siliana Maria Duarte Miranda, Gabriela Patrus Ananias De Assis Pires, Eliane Viana Mancuzo et al.

Patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) expressed gratitude in five main areas during a mindfulness-based intervention: religious belief and reliance on God as a coping strategy, the ability to perform simple daily tasks autonomously, the presence of family and friends, assurance from the health care team and treatment, and changes from mindfulness training. Despite the severity of their progressive disease, participants found meaning in relationships, spirituality, medical care, and meditation.
