Marijuana is one of the most popular psychoactive substances globally. Cannabis plants contain over 140 active compounds called cannabinoids, most notably THC and CBD. These cannabinoids act on the endocannabinoid system, which is crucial for maintaining bodily homeostasis and neuroplasticity. This article reviews how marijuana affects biochemical processes and electrical brain activity in animals and humans. The cited studies indicate that marijuana disrupts electrical brain activity in humans both during acute intoxication and with long-term use. Animal research helps clarify the mechanisms by which marijuana alters neuronal oscillations.
