Tryptamine, a psychotropic compound with an indole ring, has broad biological and pharmaceutical significance. This review covers recent achievements of tryptamine and its natural and synthetic derivatives as neurotransmitters, neuromodulators, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal agents. The authors comprehensively survey the variety of biological activities reported in these areas.
