A method using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed to identify ten psychedelic phenethylamines and tryptamines, including 2C-B, 2C-I, 5-MeO-DMT, and 5-MeO-DIPT. Five reference standards were newly synthesized, and five were purified; all were confirmed by GC-MS and NMR spectroscopy. Between April 2005 and March 2007, eight of the ten compounds were detected in 100 out of 178 examined products.

Exposing pregnant mice to MDMA from gestation through weaning did not affect birth rates but significantly reduced pup survival and body weight gain from postnatal day 3 to 21. Pups also showed weaker cliff avoidance and poorer motor function on a wire hanging test, indicating growth retardation and motor neuron dysfunction. These findings suggest that MDMA use during pregnancy and lactation may harm offspring development.

MDMA, MDA, and diphenylprolinol (a recreational drug similar to pipradrol) caused dose-dependent cell death in PC12 cells, with IC50 values ranging from 0.77 mM to 4.11 mM. At low toxic concentrations, these drugs significantly suppressed nerve growth factor (NGF)-induced neurite outgrowth. The findings suggest that these psychoactive recreational drugs may inhibit neurite growth, potentially contributing to their neurotoxic effects.

Salvinorin A (SalA) and salvinorin B (SalB) were measured in three dried leaf and nine concentrated extract products of Salvia divinorum sold in Japan. SalA content ranged from 3.2 to 5.0 micrograms per milligram in dried leaves and from 4.1 to 38.9 in extracts; SalB ranged from 0.10 to 0.17 in leaves and 0.26 to 2.42 in extracts. The analytical methods used acetonitrile extraction, graphite carbon decolorization, and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry for confirmation, with quantification by high-performance liquid chromatography for SalA and mass spectrometry for SalB. These data provide a reference for analyzing S. divinorum products on the drug market.
