Mysticism and the Renewal of Islamic Literature (Tasawuf dan Pembaharuan Kesusasteraan Islam)

Classical Islamic literature, produced across the globe for hundreds of years, expresses and explores the depths of human life and Truth. This paper highlights key mystical aspects of that literature and their relevance to world literature and culture, defining mysticism as beliefs and practices leading to proximity or union with the Divine. It explores manifestations of mysticism in works by Rumi, Ibn ‘Arabī, Al-Ghazālī, Ibn Al-Fāriḍ, and Rābi‘ah, including themes of divine essence and attributes, gnosis and knowledge, the mystical path, and divine love. The paper concludes that contemporary Muslim writers and literary commentators have a rich tradition to re-examine, revive, and match to renew and rejuvenate the literatures of Muslim nations.
