A mindfulness-based multicomponent caregiver intervention (PAACC): objectives, study design, and cohort description.

Alzheimer's & dementia (New York, N. Y.) January 1, 2025 Mamta Sapra, Lauren Hagemann, Katherine Luci et al. 3 citations

A two-arm, blinded, randomized controlled trial assigned 133 family caregivers of veterans with dementia to either a mindfulness-based multicomponent intervention (PAACC, n=67) or a cognitive behavioral intervention (REACH, n=66). At baseline, caregivers averaged 67.17 years, 85% were women, and 70% were spouses. Those in the PAACC group reported higher depressive symptoms and anxiety, and lower mindfulness receptivity, with no significant demographic differences between groups. These baseline differences in mental health and mindfulness readiness may affect how each intervention works. The PAACC intervention is the first mindfulness-based program designed specifically for caregivers of veterans, aiming to enhance cognitive flexibility, compassion, and practical skills to improve quality of life.

Understanding Alzheimer's disease as a disorder of consciousness.

Alzheimer's & dementia (New York, N. Y.) January 1, 2021 Jonathan D Huntley, Stephen M Fleming, Daniel C Mograbi et al.

People with Alzheimer's disease show a range of changes in consciousness, including reduced awareness of cognitive deficits, diminished self-awareness, and impaired introspection, which appear early and worsen as the disease progresses. These awareness impairments are linked to brain damage in areas that overlap with proposed neural correlates of consciousness. The authors argue that recognizing Alzheimer's disease as a disorder of consciousness is overdue and important for understanding patients' lived experience and improving care.
