Sorrowism and Mysticism in the Poetry of Mahadevi Verma in the Perspective of Feminine Consciousness

In the Chhayavadi era of Hindi literature, mysticism emerged as a major poetic tendency, and in the poetry of Mahadevi Verma it is expressed in a distinctive, profound, and refined manner. Her poetry establishes a spiritual relationship between the individual soul and the Supreme Soul, with poignant experiences of separation and a quest for the divine beloved. Suffering, compassion, and spiritual devotion are deeply interconnected in her work. While some scholars see Indian mysticism as an adaptation of Western mysticism, Verma's mysticism is inspired by Indian cultural and philosophical traditions, emphasizing self-realization, spiritual love, and devotion to infinite power. For her, mysticism is a living experience that gives new expression to feminine sensitivity, the consciousness of suffering, and spiritual awareness.
