Severe and enduring eating disorders carry the highest mortality rate of all psychiatric illnesses, especially when combined with treatment-resistant depression. Four patients with both conditions received repeated ketamine treatments over 12 or more months. Depression improved, but eating disorder symptoms changed only modestly.

A single patient with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) that did not respond to standard treatments experienced substantial pain relief and improved function after taking psilocybin. This case suggests psilocybin may be a promising therapy for refractory CRPS, but more research is needed to determine its effectiveness and the best dosage for chronic pain.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a potent hallucinogenic drug that alters mood and perception. Although self-inflicted cut-throat wounds and other self-harm injuries caused by LSD are extremely rare, recent reports indicate such behaviors are emerging, potentially complicating assessments in forensic psychiatry.

A 41-year-old fully vaccinated woman with Long-COVID syndrome experienced significant symptom relief after self-medicating with psilocybin and MDMA. Long-COVID, a condition persisting after the acute phase of COVID-19, currently lacks effective holistic treatments. This case suggests potential benefit from these substances, but further research is required to evaluate their safety and efficacy.

A single patient with severe treatment-resistant depression received maintenance therapy with very low-dose subcutaneous ketamine, following initial improvement with intravenous ketamine. A retrospective chart review showed that this approach sustained the antidepressant response without significant side effects, suggesting a potential alternative maintenance strategy for patients who respond to intravenous ketamine but require ongoing treatment.

A patient with throat cancer and severe existential distress safely received psychedelic-assisted therapy at home. The patient tolerated the intervention well and reported on measures of anxiety, depression, and distress. This single-case study aligns with previous findings suggesting that psychedelic-assisted therapy can be safely applied to potentially relieve existential distress in people with life-threatening conditions. Because this is one case, generalizations require caution; placebo effects, expectancy, and the natural course of illness may influence outcomes. Controlled trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety in diverse settings.
