Long-term transformative effects and integration challenges of psychedelic experiences

Consciousness Spirituality & Transpersonal Psychology September 12, 2022 Victor Jivanescu 4 citations

Psychedelic experiences with psilocybin and LSD can inspire long-term positive transformation, but integration challenges often include communication difficulties, lack of a supportive community, and oppressive legislation. A mixed-method study with six interview participants and a survey of 39 people from the Romanian population found changes in perception of self, emotional, spiritual, and interpersonal transformation. The statistical similarity between the interview group and the broader national sample supported the qualitative findings. Integration difficulties ranged from mild to substantial, with interpersonal and cultural factors being common obstacles. Further cross-cultural research is needed to confirm cultural differences.

Factor analysis of the MEQ43 suggests non-psychedelic mystical experiences are different from psychedelic mystical experiences

Consciousness Spirituality & Transpersonal Psychology November 17, 2023 Kirsti A. Formoso 1 citation

A 25-item version of the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ25) better captures non-psychedelic mystical experiences than the existing 30-item version (MEQ30). Confirmatory factor analysis showed the MEQ30 did not fit data from 136 participants who reported a non-psychedelic mystical experience. Exploratory factor analysis of the 43-item pool yielded a four-factor structure with 25 items: Sacred Unity, Noetic Quality, Time-Space Transcendence, and Ineffable and Paradoxical. The MEQ25 demonstrated excellent internal reliability (α = .93) and strong convergent validity with the M-Scale. The separate noetic quality factor is considered a salient and therapeutic aspect of mystical experience, and the refined time-space subscale better reflects theory and subjective experience of non-psychedelic mystical experiences.

Psilocybin as a healer

Consciousness Spirituality & Transpersonal Psychology September 12, 2022 Kavita Golia 1 citation

Psilocybin microdosing—taking a sub-perceptual amount of the psychedelic regularly—is a growing societal trend. Twelve individuals who microdosed described seven common themes in their lived experiences: improved mental health, dose-related effects, a feeling of connection to self or nature, increased productivity, heightened wellbeing, more effective problem-solving, and, among those with a musical background, greater creativity. These self-reported benefits support the use of psilocybin microdosing, but the authors note that controlled studies are needed to confirm the findings.

Rewilding ourselves through psychedelic integration

Consciousness Spirituality & Transpersonal Psychology December 23, 2025 Rosie Leeson

Psychedelic integration is a non-linear process without clear time boundaries, supported by community and integrative practices that help embody insights. The ACER Integration framework (Accept, Connect, Embody, Restore) provides a toolkit for grounding, connecting, and nurturing individuals after psychedelic experiences. Common characteristics include synchronicities and the challenge of embodiment. Community plays a critical role in facilitating self-reflection and embodiment.

Bridge weavers

Consciousness Spirituality & Transpersonal Psychology October 16, 2025 Dominika Klimas

Contemporary psychedelic facilitation in shamanic and ceremonial settings, especially with the Shipibo tribe in Peru and ayahuasca ceremonies, requires complex competencies and roles. Based on interviews with eight highly skilled facilitators, five key themes emerged, synthesized into two interrelated domains describing facilitators' responsibilities. The work highlights challenges in non-clinical, non-recreational environments guided by Indigenous shamans. The research aims to improve holding space and safeguarding practices in psychedelic therapy, coaching, and facilitation, while emphasizing the importance of integrating anthropological and diverse viewpoints to respectfully bridge Indigenous and Western perspectives.
