Embodying Metaverse as artificial life: At the intersection of media and 4E cognition theories

Filozofija i drustvo January 1, 2022 Ivana Uspenski, Jelena Guga 10 citations

Media theory and cognitive science have both studied how media environments shape human perception and cognition, yet they remain largely separate disciplines. With the rise of virtual reality and the Metaverse, the physical body becomes increasingly intertwined with virtual spaces. This paper argues for an interdisciplinary approach to understand how immersive environments affect sensory-motor capabilities and warns against uncontrolled growth of the Metaverse. It introduces the concept of the "Dry Body"—a virtual entity that shares cognitive resources with the physical body but is not physically part of it, evolving a new form of corporeality adapted to synthetic surroundings.

Prolegomenon to a philosophy of meditation

Filozofija i drustvo January 1, 2025 Rick Repetti

A philosophy of meditation must address distinctions between meditative practices, states, and traits; the role of religion-based traditions; contemporary practices and research; whether meditation qualifies as a philosophical practice; critiques like 'McMindfulness'; the possibility that such practices reveal metaphysical truths or lead to enlightenment; and how physics or metaphysics might explain paranormal corollaries of mystical experiences. The author argues that meditative practices are among the most powerful forms of spiritual and philosophical practice, drawing on personal experiences and speculative hypotheses.

What is it like to be the universe?

Filozofija i drustvo January 1, 2025 Paul Marshall

Cosmopsychism, the view that the universe as a whole has subjectivity, is explored by considering what that cosmic subjectivity might be like. Philosophical opinions vary widely, from the universe being a mere mess to being highly advanced. Mystical experiences that produce a sense of unity or identity with the universe could offer clues. Evidence suggests a conscious mind of extraordinary quality and possibly many cosmic subjects, forming an intersubjectivity that resembles a modified version of Leibniz's monadology.

Is meditation the royal road that leads to pure consciousness?

Filozofija i drustvo January 1, 2025 Mark Losoncz

Pure consciousness, known for millennia in contemplative traditions as experience free of content and ego, is now studied scientifically. This article examines Thomas Metzinger's claim that meditation is the best path to study it—the Royal Road Thesis (RRT). It critically analyzes the concept of meditation, uses non-meditative descriptions to further deconstruct it, and argues that Metzinger's minimal phenomenal experience is not inherently mystical. Interpreting these ideas within consciousness culture and spirituality, the article concludes the RRT is very problematic and should be replaced by a more nuanced approach.
